TREASURE is a South Korean boy group formed by YG Entertainment through the reality competition show "YG Treasure Box" in 2019. The show brought together 28 trainees, and the final lineup of 12 members was initially divided into two groups, TREASURE and MAGNUM, but YG later combined them into one group named TREASURE. The group officially debuted on August 7, 2020, marking YG Entertainment's return to launching a boy group since WINNER's debut in 2014 and iKON's in 2015. The group was presented as a global-oriented act, strategically leveraging the international appeal of K-Pop.
TREASURE's musical identity is characterized by a dynamic blend of hip-hop, pop, and electronic influences, a style that is very common to YG Entertainment groups. Their debut single album, "The First Step: Chapter One," featured the high-energy track "BOY," which immediately showcased their powerful performances and catchy melodies. Subsequent releases like "I LOVE YOU" and "MMM" continued to refine their sound, emphasizing youthful energy and impactful choreography. The group often incorporates a blend of Korean and English lyrics, targeting both domestic and international fans, which has helped them gain substantial traction in markets like Japan and Southeast Asia. Their artistic style is known for its vibrant visuals, often using bright colors and youthful themes in their music videos and performances.
TREASURE holds a significant position in the fourth generation of K-Pop groups, especially as they represent a new wave of talent emerging from YG Entertainment. Their debut was highly anticipated, given YG's track record of producing successful groups like BIGBANG, 2NE1, WINNER and BLACKPINK. While they inherit the expectations associated with their agency, TREASURE has also charted its own path, particularly by focusing on engaging with fans through various digital platforms and global promotional activities. They represent a shift towards a more interactive and globally accessible model in K-Pop, responding to the evolving dynamics of the industry.
Since their debut, TREASURE has experienced significant growth and achieved several milestones. Their "The First Step" series of single albums and studio album collectively sold over a million copies, marking them as a "million-selling artist" early in their career. They received multiple "Rookie of the Year" awards in 2020 and 2021, solidifying their place as a promising act in the K-Pop scene. In 2022, the group faced a temporary restructuring when members Bang Yedam and Mashiho left for personal reasons, leaving the group with 10 members. Despite this challenge, TREASURE continued their activities with renewed determination, releasing new music and embarking on their first arena tour in Japan.
TREASURE's members each bring unique talents and personalities to the group. Choi Hyunsuk, Jihoon, and Yoshi serve as the main rappers, contributing significantly to the group's songwriting and production. Asahi and Haruto have also been involved in composing and writing lyrics for several of their tracks. Individually, some members have explored other avenues within the entertainment industry, such as variety show appearances and acting roles, enhancing their personal brands while contributing to the group's overall visibility.
As of late 2023, TREASURE remains an active and influential group within the K-Pop landscape. Their consistent releases, coupled with their active engagement with fans through social media and live performances, have allowed them to maintain a strong and growing fanbase. They continue to tour internationally, further solidifying their presence as a global K-Pop act. TREASURE's legacy is still being written, but their early success, resilience in the face of challenges, and commitment to connecting with fans position them as a group to watch in the evolving world of K-Pop.
